CONTEMPORARY

"Contemporary Literature"

Contemporary literature, as the first category introduced in one of our major subject (Contemporary, Popular, and Emergent Literature), became a way for me to discover such beautiful stories. Contemporary literature is a broad category of written works that span the period from a given point in history to the present moment. This literary age not only refers to a certain time period but also to a certain style and quality of writing. Some example books from this category are The Secret History by Donna Tartt, The Handmaid's Tale by Margarett Atwood, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, and more.

Why is it important in the development of literature? For me, cultures' social and political beliefs are accurately portrayed through contemporary literature. As a rule, writers go in search of what is in vogue in their time while writing for publication. Because it enables them to shed light on society's strengths and weaknesses. A good deal of contemporary literature may enable the reader to enhance his or her ability to think rationally. When we talk about Contemporary Literature, we need to understand not only a few topics or settings but the entirety of what we're discussing. As society evolves, so does the composition's substance and meaning.

However, there are still a lot of challenges regarding contemporary literature. As one example, I remember what had Bruce Sterling told that the vernacular means of everyday communication like cellphones, social networks, and streaming video are moving into areas where printed text cannot follow. I agree with this because, in the age we are living in today, smartphones, social networks, and streaming films allow us to obtain easy access to nearly everything we want and need. We currently live in a world where owning a cellphone is highly desirable; society now teaches us that without a smartphone or other device, we cannot live, as if we cannot survive. It's true, however doing so may result in books and other print media being left behind. With one click on our smartphones, we may have the books we need or wanted to read for academic purposes, or just for enjoyment. Before, when a teacher gives their students an assignment to look for a certain book and answer some questions about it, this can be difficult because many students don't have access to reliable libraries, but today, where almost everyone has access to cellphones, through social networks or streaming videos online, finding information digitally is much simpler. Some also seen this as positive due to the fact that contemporary books can be search online, but on the other hand, it was a negative impact for printed books because they were given less attention and importance today than before.

What can I say generally to the category of Contemporary Literature? Although I am not really fond of reading, what I like about contemporary books is the fact that it speaks for the injustices and problems that happened in the history, issues were raised during this tragic epoch in world history are addressed in the works from this category. Authors of contemporary literature, through their writing, they manage to illustrate what has happened before, and some lessons on what can we do to survive.
